The Smokey Mountain Ski Club was established in 1959 by the Iron Ore Company of
Canada. It was started by a group of ski enthusiasts who built a rope tow and temporary ski
lodge on the southwest face of Smokey Mountain. This location did not offer enough
potential for further development and during the summer of 1961 the whole operation was
moved to the present location on the east face of Smokey Mountain. The lodge was built
and was opened on New Year's Eve, 1961. The Iron Ore Company of Canada built the
road to the ski lodge in late 1961. During 1963, the first poma lift was built on Grenoble
and Smokey became incorporated in 1964.
The building of the facilities was done by the members in their spare time. Heavy equipment
was supplied and money was donated by the major compaines in the area. 1966 saw the
hiring of the first full-time professional ski instructor while 1967 saw the second poma lift built
on the southeast slope. A snow grooming machine was purchased in 1969 and in the fall of
1970 a full-time ski coach was hired. During the years, lights were also installed on several
of the slopes for night skiing.
The Smokey Mountain Ski Club then had in excess of 1200 members whereas the facilites
could handle only 900 members. So, In 1972 it was decided to expand the Smokey
Mountain ski area due to increased participation in the sport of skiing.
Over the years it has hosted numerous events such as:
- 1970 Canadian Alpine Championships
- 1976 Pontiac Cup Final Race
- Atlantic Cup (1994, 1997 and 2001)
- Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games (1982 and 1998)
- Annual Birch Mug, Slush Cup and Snowboard Events
- Annual Iron Mug Race
- Canadian Ski Patrol Divisional Meetings
